As a prize winner in the 2007 Bartók International Opera Conducting Competition, Paul Mauffray has conducted Bluebeard’s Castle, La Bohème, Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci, Rigoletto, Samson et Dalila, La Traviata, & Tosca in Romania. He was then invited as a guest conductor at the Bucharest National Opera where he conducted La Traviata in 2010.

Recently, he conducted Pictures at an Exhibition in a return engagement with the Janáček Philharmonic in Ostrava, Hansel & Gretel at Opéra Louisiane, and is currently engaged as Associate Instructor / Assistant Conductor at Indiana University Opera.

He has conducted in 15 countries on 3 continents and developed his symphonic repertoire with regular engagements predominantly with Czech orchestras for over the past 15 years. He has also conducted Cosi fan tutte at the Schleswig-Holstein Landestheater, and subscription concerts with the Augsburg Philharmonic, Slovak Philharmonic, and Orchestre National de Lyon.

In 2007, Mauffray was engaged as Studienleiter/Assistant Conductor at the Janacek Opera/National Theater in Brno, Czech Republic, where he conducted Don Carlos. His successful performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (taken over on 24 hours notice) with the Brno Philharmonic, led to an immediate return engagement in Mozart’s Requiem.

Paul Mauffray’s passion for the operas of Leos Janacek led him to study in the Czech Republic and work as assistant to such prominent conductors as Bohumil Gregor, Jiri Belohlavek, and Sir Charles Mackerras. He has worked as assistant conductor already on over eight productions of Janacek operas including, Jenufa, Kata Kabanova, The Cunning Little Vixen, The Makropulos Case, and the American premier of Osud (Fate).

Mauffray has been an assistant conductor at the Prague National Theater, with the Czech Philharmonic on recordings of Kata Kabanova, Rusalka, and at the Salzburg Festival with Sir John Eliot Gardiner on Jenufa. He has also conducted at the Bard Music Festival in New York as assistant to Leon Botstein where he helped prepare works of Janacek such as The Excursions of Mr. Broucek and the Glagolitic Mass.

He has collaborated with Universal Edition in the corrections to the critical edition of Jenufa according to the original source material in the Janacek archives in Brno. In the spring of 2008 he was engaged as Studienleiter/Assistant Conductor and Czech Language Coach on Kata Kabanova with Kirill Petrenko and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchester at the Theater an der Wien.

A native of Louisiana, Mauffray began his music studies at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and Louisiana State University. He studied conducting in Germany with Sergiu Celibedache, at Indiana Univeristy with Arthur Fagen and David Effron, and has conducted in masterclasses under the guidance of Larry Rachlef, David Zinman, James Conlon, David Robertson, and Jorma Panula. He was a conducting fellow at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen and awarded a conducting grant from the Geraldine C. & Emory M. Ford foundation.

He was awarded first prize in the 1996 Freedman Conducting Competition, and was semi-finalist in Bonn, Cadaques, and in the Prague Spring Conducting Competition where he earned Honorary Mention. He was the only American conductor admitted to the orchestra rounds of the 2001 Besançon conducting competition. He has also been one of a select number of conductors invited to participate in masterclasses with Michael Tilson Thomas in Miami (2001), with Esa-Pekka Salonen in Singapore (2008), and with Franz Welser-Möst in Indiana (2010).

Der Dirigent Paul Mauffray stammt aus New Orleans (geb. 1968). Seine musikalische Ausbildung führte ihn sehr früh nach Europa, wo er z.B. an der Justus Liebig Universität und an der Johannes Gutenberg Universität unter Sergiu Celibedache studierte. Nach diversen Meisterklassen (auch in seiner Heimat USA) ging er in die Tschechische Republik - vor allem, um das Schaffen Leos Janaceks in dessen Heimatstadt Brno zu studieren. Weiters erhielt er in der Tschechischen Republik die Möglichkeit sich ein sehr breites Konzertrepertoire mit den verschiedensten Orchestern aufzubauen.

Sein fundiertes Wissen zum Gesamtwerk Leos Janaceks führte sehr rasch dazu, dass er mit einigen der bedeutendsten Künstler des internationalen Opernbetriebes bei verschiedensten Projekten arbeitete:
Sir Charles Mackerras und Gabriela Benackova (Janaceks Katja Kabanowa), Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Karita Mattila und Hildegard Behrens (Janaceks Jenufa bei den Salzburger Festspielen 2001), Renee Fleming, Dolora Zajick, Ben Heppner und Franz Hawlata (Dvoraks Rusalka, wieder unter Sir Charles Mackerras), Bohumil Gregor und Jiri Belohlavek (gemeinsame Einstudierung von diversen Werken Smetanas und Janaceks am Nationaltheater in Prag).

Gastauftritte brachten den Preisträger diverser Dirigenten-Wettbewerbe (z.B. Bartok Internationalen Opernwettbewerb 2. Preis, Freedman Wettbewerb 1. Preis) unter anderem nach Deutschland, Frankreich, Österreich, die Slowakei, Schweden, die USA und immer wieder natürlich in seine Wahlheimat, die Tschechische Republik, wo er auch die Stelle des Generalmusikdirektors an der Oper von Usti nad Labem innehatte.

Sein sehr kurzfristiges Einspringen bei Strawinskys Le Sacre du Printemps mit der Brünner Philharmonie war ein grosser Erfolg und führte zu weiteren Verpflichtungen mit diesem Orchester (z.B. Mozarts Requiem). Weiters arbeitete er im Rahmen seiner Gastauftritte mit vielen bedeutenden Orchestern (z.B. Orchestre National de Lyon, Augsburger Philharmonie, Slowakische Philharmonie).

Im letzten Saison trat Paul Mauffray im Brünner National Theater als Studienleiter bei (Dirigate: Verdis Don Carlos), und im dieser Saison ist er als musikalischer Assistent für Katja Kabanowa im Theater an der Wien engagiert. Als Preistrager des Bartok Opernwettbewerbs ist er als Gastdirigent zum Bucharest National Theater eingeladen.

Paul Mauffray was twice selected as one of the top finalists in the Bartok International Opera Conducting Competition in Romania, in 2005 and in 2007 when he was awarded Second Prize. Apart from conducting complete performances of Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle (both times), he also conducted scenes from La Boheme, Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci, Rigoletto, Samson et Dalila, La Traviata, & Tosca. In 2007 he has conducted the Slovak Sinfonietta in Zilina and the Cherubini Requiem in a subscription concert with the prestigious Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava. During this time, he took up the position of “Studienleiter”, or head of musical preparation, at the National Theater in Brno, Janacek Opera.

In 2005 Mauffray successfully replaced another conductor on 24 hours notice with the Brno Philharmonic in Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps ! This orchestra later volunteered its services to perform Mozart’s Requiem with him in a sold-out benefit concert for victims of the hurricanes in New Orleans. In the spring of 2005, Mauffray was assistant conductor on a (as of yet unreleased) recording of Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony with Serge Baudo and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 he conducted the South Bohemia Chamber Philharmonic in a concert in honor of the anniversary of the end of World War II in Cesky Krumlov.

A major focus of Mauffray’s work has been on Czech operas as assistant conductor at the Prague National Theatre, the Salzburg Music Festival, and on recordings with the Czech Philharmonic. He has covered nearly all of the major works of Leos Janacek as a replacement for Libor Pesek with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and as assistant to Bohumil Gregor, Jiri Belohlavek, Sir Charles Mackerras, and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. For the summer of 2003, he was an assistant conductor to Leon Botstein on works of Janacek at the Bard Music Festival including the Glagolitic Mass and Osud which was the seventh Janacek opera Mauffray worked on during eight years.

In the 2003–04 season, Mauffray guest conducted the Rapides Symphony and the Monroe Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana where was a finalist in both Music Director searches. He has also guest conducted the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra and has been a finalist in resident conductor searches with the Orchestre National de Lyon and Schleswig-Holstein Landestheater where he conducted a performance of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. In 2001, he was one of six conductors selected by Michael Tilson Thomas to conduct Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra in a masterclass with the New World Symphony in Miami.

In 1996, Paul Mauffray served as Interim Artistic Director of the City Opera of Usti nad Labem with performances of operas by Mozart, Smetana, Dvorak, Verdi, and Puccini. He has made numerous guest appearances with symphony orchestras throughout the Czech Republic including: the Prague Philharmonia, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Hradec Kralove Philharmonic, Pilsen Philharmonic, Carlsbad Symphony, Talich Chamber Orchestra, Pardubice Chamber Philharmonic, and the Janacek Philharmonic.

In America, Mauffray was assistant to Raymond Harvey on Gounod’s Faust at El Paso Opera, Texas, he worked as assistant to Michael Morgan on Massenet’s Werther at Festival Opera in California, and he conducted performances of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker with the Oakland Ballet.

He was awarded First Prize for his performance of Brahms’ Symphony #1 at the Freedman Conducting Competition in America in 1996. He has also been a semi-finalist at international conducting competitions in: Bonn, Germany; Cadaques, Spain; and twice in the Prague Spring Conducting Competition where he was awarded Honorary Mention for conducting Janacek’s Taras Bulba and Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps.

He was a conducting fellow in the American Academy of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival and studied in the summer conducting programs at the Conductor’s Institute in South Carolina and Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy. As a winner of the Geraldine C. & Emory M. Ford Award for American Conductors, he studied with Joseph Gifford in a conducting workshop in Boston. He has conducted in masterclasses under the guidance of Larry Rachlef, Lawrence Leighton-Smith, Paul Vermel, David Zinman, James Conlon, David Robertson, and Jorma Panula.

He began his musical studies at an early age at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts with Dr. Bert Braud and earned a Bachelor’s degree in music and German at the Louisiana State University where he also took graduate studies in baroque music and conducting. In Germany, he studied musicology at the Justus Liebig Universität and began conducting studies at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität with Sergiu Celibedache. He has furthered his graduate studies in musicology at the Masaryk University in Brno with a specialization in the music of Leoš Janáček.

Již dvakrát se stal Paul Mauffray jedním z hlavních finalistů mezinárodní dirigentské soutěže Bartók International Opera Conducting Competition v Rumunsku, a sice v roce 2005 a pak opět v roce 2007, kdy ve finále získal 2. cenu. Kromě kompletního provedení opery B. Bartóka Hrad knížete Modrovouse, které dirigoval již podruhé, se Mauffray představil také ve vybraných scénách z oper Bohéma, Carmen, Sedlák kavalír, Komedianti, Rigoletto, Samson a Dalila, Traviata a Tosca. V roce 2007 dirigoval Paul Mauffray Státní komorní orchestr Žilina. Téhož roku uvedl v Bratislavě v rámci abonentních koncertů ve spolupráci s renomovanou Slovenskou filharmonií velkolepou oratorní skladbu Cherubiniho Requiem. V té době také nastoupil jako vedoucí hudebního nastudování v Janáčkově opeře Národního divadla v Brně.

Americký dirigent Paul Mauffray, pocházející z Louisiany začal své hudební studium na New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (komponování, hru na klavír, violoncello, pozoun a jazzový bas). Je absolventem Louisianské státní univerzity, studoval na Liebigově univerzitě v Giessenu, na Chigiho akademii v Sieně, na American Academy of Conducting v Aspen Colorado, v dirigentském semináři Sergia Celibidache na Gutenbergově univerzitě v Mohuči a magisterské studium hudební vědy na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně.

Jeho první působení v České republice byl záskok na poslední chvíli při provedení Janáčkovy orchestrální suity z opery Příhody lišky Bystroušky s Filharmonií Hradec Králové v roce 1994. Do Hradce Králové byl Mauffray znovu pozván jako hostující dirigent v roce 1999, 2000 a 2002.

V soutěži Pražského jara 1995 získal Mauffray jako semifinalista Čestné uznání za provedení Stravinského Svěcení jara a Janáčkova Tarase Bulby. O rok později zvítězil ve Freedmanově dirigentské soutěži ve státě Missouri. Byl semifinalista v soutěži v Cadaques (Španělsko) a v Bonnu (Německo).

V letech 1995 až 1997 byl asistujícím dirigentem opery pražského Národního divadla, kde spolupracoval s dirigenty Bohumilem Gregorem a Jiřím Bělohlávkem na Janáčkových operách Příhody lišky Bystroušky, Káťa Kabanová a na Její pastorkyňa. V roce 1996 byl zastupujícím šéfem opery v městském divadle v Ústi nad Labem, kde dirigoval opery od Mozarta, Smetany, Dvořáka a Verdiho.

V roce 1998 Mauffray dirigoval koncerty na festivalu Mladá Praha s Pražskou komorní filharmonií a na festivalu Talichův Beroun s Českým národním symfonickým orchestrem. Mezi 1994 a 1999 také působil u několika studentských orchestrů jako například Beethovenův orchestr v Ostravě, Orchestr Mládeže Vargön (ve Švédsku a taky v Praze) a Kammerorchester der Nationen na festivalu v německém Hundisburgu, kde řídil orchestr vytvořený ze studentů z třinácti různých zemí.

V letech 1997 a 1998 asistoval Siru Charlesovi Mackerrasovi při natáčení Káti Kabanové a Rusalky. Působil v operních domech v kalifornském Walnut Creeku (Massenet - Werther), v El Pasu (Gounod - Faust), ve Flensburgu (Mozart - Cosi fan tutte) a v Salcburku, kde asistoval Siru Johnovi Eliotovi Gardinerovi při nastudování Její pastorkyně s Českou filharmonií.

Paul Mauffray spolupůsobil při přípravě sedmi Janáčkových inscenací jako asistent dirigenta včetně prvního provedení Janáčkova Osudu v USA na Bard Music Festival. Na tomto Janáčkově festivalu v New Yorku připravil Mauffray sbor a sólisty pro provedeni Říkadel, Glagolské mše, několik menších Janáčkových skladeb a scén z opery Příhody lišky Bystroušky a Výlety pana Broučka. Mezi orchestrální skladby, u kterých asistoval v New Yorku, patřil i Janáčkův Taras Bulba a Sinfonietta. Tyto dvě skladby již dirigoval Mauffray v roce 1997 během zkoušky s Českým národním symfonickým orchestrem jako záskok za onemocnělého dirigenta Libora Peška.

Mezi další evropské orchestry, které Mauffray řídil patří Janáčkova filharmonie Ostrava, Plzeňská filharmonie, Jihočeská komorní filharmonie České Budějovice, Karlovarský symfonický orchestr, Talichův komorní orchestr, Komorní filharmonie Pardubice, filharmonie Augsburg, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne a Orchestre National de Lyon.

V sezóně 2003-04, Paul Mauffray hostoval u Amerických orchestrů Rapides Symphony a Monroe Symphony Orchestra v Louisianě, kde byl zároveň finalistou na místa šéfdirigenta u obou orchestrů. Mauffray dirigoval v roce 2000 Oakland East Bay Symphony a Oakland Ballet v Kalifornii. V následujícím roce byl pozván mezi čtyři mladé dirigenty, aby řídil Bartókův Koncert pro orchestr v mistrovském kurzu s Michaelem Tilson-Thomasem a New World Symphony Orchestra v Miami (Florida). V roce 2005 zaskočil Paul Mauffray na poslední chvíli za náhle onemocnělého dirigenta při koncertu Státní filharmonie Brno. Na programu, který zůstal beze změny, bylo Stravinského Svěcení jara. O pár měsíců později dirigoval Mozartovo Rekviem se Státní filharmonií Brno a s Českým filharmonickým sborem na benefičním koncertu ve prospěch obětí hurikánu v jeho rodném New Orleans.

Jako držitele druhé hlavní ceny mezinárodní dirigentské soutěže Bartók International Opera Conducting Competition čeká dirigenta Paula Mauffraye v sezóně 2007/2008 hostování v Bukurešťské národní opeře.
